Voyage to the World of Western Classical Music

A Self-study program to develop general knowledge on Western Classical music

Learning a musical instrument or singing in Western Classical music genre and method without having the general knowledge about the world of Western Classical music could become extremely challenging for many students to grow as a complete musician. Voyage to the World of Western Classical Music is a project for students to develop general knowledge in Western Classical Music. It is a self-study program conducted and managed by Michael Makhal Symphony Orchestra (MMSO) through its music e-learning platform MusicLesson. In and team. The goal is to encourage the students to do personal research and study about the musical legends, the periods, compositions, history, and background of the Western Classical music world. This is not a contest, neither a formal examination, but research and study oriented program. The entire project is planned and conceptualized by Internationally known Indian Composer and Conductor, founder of the Indo-European Orchestra Maestro Michael Makhal (ALCM).

As music teachers, educators and examiners, we commit our passion, energy and entire life on one single vision – to instill the gift of music to every student come in our way. However, often we find the lack of general knowledge and idea about the important areas of Western Classical music limits the students from having steady progress. Great masters of classical music often say that they understood certain deep and complex music only when they studied the composer. Once I heard a Piano Maestra from the UK shared in a workshop that she understood how to play a particular work of Tchaikovsky properly only when she studied Pyotr Tchaikovsky and his geographical background. She also shared that, when she saw the legendary Pianist Martha Argerich in an auditorium, she got highly inspired to see how the top Pianist of the World still plays like the young Argerich with such innocence, energy and passion. Today’s students truly miss this way of learning Western Classical music and they never know the history, geography, past and present of the very subject they are learning. Voyage to the World of Western Classical Music program will try to fill some of the gaps through the self-study program. And, we will hope the students will grow a keen interest to study further as they journey with music. We can only inspire them!

 The Project

The project would be on a monthly (2 evaluation papers each month) format. It is a 5 months program and have different segments and set of question papers every month. A student may appear for one month or more, that’s the student’s choice, however, we would recommend the students to continue with the study with us for 5 months in order to develop a comprehensive level of general knowledge in various important areas of Western classical music.

The ‘Introduction Edition’ of the project is free of charge paper. We welcome and encourage students to participate in the free ‘Introduction Edition’ to get an idea of how the program is going to be. We would be charging a minimal monthly fee for the ‘monthly 2 papers program each month’. There would be 1 question paper with a study period of around 12-14 days, which the students have to answer after doing the research and study on their own based on the questions and submit before the deadline mentioned in the question paper. All the question papers will be prepared and shared through the ‘Google Forms’ format. The project will cover some of the most important areas of the Western Classical music World – Composers & Periods, Musicians, Instruments & Performance Disciplines and Compositions.

To study and answer the questions given in the evaluation papers, students will require to research and study on the internet and books (if available) on their own. There are many websites and blogs on the internet which have ample information and research material about the world of Western Classical music that the students can easily access and study. Wikipedia could be one of the places for such resources students might like to go through. Copy-Paste Answers from the internet will not be accepted if found. Students are encouraged to research on their own and write in their own words. The ‘Certificate of Participation’ will be presented to the students who would attend for 5 months (total 10 papers) in a year for having done a comprehensive level of study and research on various areas and segments of Western Classical Music through our evaluation program. We might have a new batch starting every month for the 5 months program if we have enough interested students. A student may request to take extra time to complete a particular paper or a gap-month in special circumstances, but that would be subject to consideration. Read more about the regulations here.
